Play Therapy and Sand Tray Therapy provide a safe, supportive environment where children and teens can explore emotions, process difficult experiences, and build confidence in ways that feel natural to them. Through toys, miniature figures, art, games, and sand, children can express thoughts and feelings that may be difficult to put into words.
Sand Tray Therapy can be used with children, teens and adults to aid in expressing emotions, processing experiences and increase problem solving skills.
What Is Play Therapy?
Play Therapy is an evidence-based counseling approach designed specifically for children. Instead of relying solely on conversation, I use carefully selected play materials to help children communicate in their own natural language: play.
Children may choose to:
-
Build with blocks
-
Draw or paint
-
Play games
-
Use puppets
-
Create stories
-
Play with dolls or action figures
-
Engage in imaginative play
-
Explore the sand tray
While it may look like ordinary play, every activity is intentionally chosen to help children express emotions, solve problems, strengthen coping skills, and develop healthier ways of relating to themselves and others.
What Is Sand Tray Therapy?
Sometimes words aren't enough.
Whether you're a child, teenager, or adult, difficult experiences can be hard to explain. Trauma, grief, anxiety, relationship struggles, and major life changes often leave people feeling overwhelmed or unsure how to express what they're carrying.
Sand Tray Therapy offers a unique, hands-on way to explore thoughts and emotions through the use of a tray of sand and a collection of miniature figures. As individuals create scenes in the sand, they often discover new insights, process difficult experiences, and express emotions that may have been difficult to access through conversation alone.
The sand tray creates a safe, calming space where healing can unfold naturally, without pressure or the expectation of having all the answers.
For Children
Children communicate most naturally through play. In the sand tray, they can tell stories, express feelings, and work through challenging experiences using miniature figures instead of words. This allows them to process emotions in a way that matches their developmental stage while building confidence, emotional awareness, and healthy coping skills.
For Teens
Adolescence can be a time of intense emotions, changing relationships, and growing responsibilities. Many teens struggle to talk openly about what they're experiencing, especially when they fear judgment or don't know how to describe their feelings.
Sand Tray Therapy provides a creative, non-threatening way for teens to explore identity, relationships, anxiety, depression, trauma, and life transitions. Creating scenes in the sand often helps teens gain perspective, recognize patterns, and express themselves more comfortably than through conversation alone.
For Adults
Adults often carry experiences that have been difficult to process for years. Trauma, grief, chronic stress, relationship challenges, and life transitions can become stored not only in memories but also in emotions and physical responses.
Sand Tray Therapy offers adults an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and explore these experiences symbolically. Many people find that creating a sand tray scene helps them identify patterns, gain new insights, and process emotions that may have felt stuck or difficult to verbalize. The process can complement traditional talk therapy by engaging both emotional and cognitive aspects of healing.
